Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of art by her aunt Denise when she was a child. DuVernay worked as night nurses to afford her mother the space she required during the day for the love of art, literature, and theater. DuVernay immediately fell in love when she showed her that 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that the arts can serve to engage people. DuVernay was taught to be socially aware by her mother. DuVernay lived in Compton for most of her childhood, but she would spend every summer with the extended family of her father living in Lowndes County Alabama. DuVernay's Dad recalled seeing the civil rights march of the past on the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay used her summers in Alabama as inspiration for her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in California in the year 1990. She went to the University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay began producing television news when she was just a student. She began her career as an intern with CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay was told to look at the trash of a jury member's home. Her tasks to complete left her unhappy and so, after deciding not to continue in journalism, she moved on to the field of public relations. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a Junior Publicist right after college. Her own Public Relations company, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999. The agency was the first to launch a variety of lifestyle and promotion networks, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
