Penelope Cruz Sanchez

Penelope Cruz Sanchez was the daughter of Eduardo Cruz (a retailer) and Encarna Sanchez (a hairdresser). When she was a baby she was already an avid performer, re-enacting TV commercials for her family's amusement, but she decided to concentrate her efforts on dancing. After nine years of ballet classes at Spain's National Conservatory she was able to continue her dance training under the direction of several prominent dancers. Her true calling was discovered at age 15 when she smashed more than 300 other girls during an audition at a talent agency. The contract she was offered secured her roles on Spanish television shows as well as music videos. It opened the way to a promising career on the big screen. Cruz made her debut in a film with The Greek Labyrinth (1993). (The Greek Labyrinth). Following that she appeared briefly in Framed (1992) directed by Timothy Dalton. Her third film, Belle Epoque (1992) was an Oscar-winning production in which she played one the four sisters competing to win the love of an attractive deserter army soldier. It also received several Goyas in Spain that is the Spanish equivalent to the Academy Awards. The list of credits continued to grow by the number of films she acted in each year, and eventually Cruz was the leading lady in Spanish cinema. Live Flesh (1997) (Live Flesh) offered her the chance to work with renowned Spanish director Pedro Almodovar (who would later be her ticket to international fame), and the same year she was the lead actress in the thriller/drama/mystery/sci-fi film Open Your Eyes (1997), a huge hit in Spain that earned eight Goyas (though none for Cruz). It all changed in 1998 when her film industry comedy La Nina De Tus Ojos (1998) received her the Best Actress Goya. Cruz also made a few forays into English-language film, but her first big international success was the film of Almodovar All About My Mother (1999) in which she played an unchaste , but well-meaning nun. Cruz was suddenly in high demand across the Atlantic and the west coast as the film was awarded numerous awards and accolades. Woman on Top (2000) was her next major project.
